Documents and insurance for renting a bike in Indonesia

Indonesia is easier when your rental papers are ready before the owner hands over the keys.

What to carry

For residents with KITAS or KITAP, ask the owner which Indonesian licence is expected before you ride.

• Passport or passport copy and visa screenshot.
• National motorcycle licence plus an IDP with motorcycle entitlement for short stays.
• Rental agreement, owner contact, and deposit receipt.
• Bike registration copy, usually referred to locally as STNK.

Before deposit

Avoid leaving your passport as a deposit. Use a written deposit, photograph the bike from all sides, and save the fuel level, helmet condition, and scratches.

Before the first ride, check brakes, lights, tyres, horn, helmet fit, and where the registration copy is kept.
