Documents
Documents and insurance for renting a bike in Thailand
Thailand has easy scooter rental, but the paperwork still matters for police stops, insurance, and deposit disputes.
What to carry
Tourist-area scooters can be poorly documented, so ask the owner to show what should be presented during a check.
- Passport copy and hotel contact.
- National motorcycle licence plus a 1968 IDP if your licence needs one.
- Rental agreement with plate number, owner contact, and deposit terms.
- Helmet, registration/tax details, and proof of compulsory insurance if the owner provides it.
Before deposit
Do not leave your passport as security. Photograph the bike, write down every visible scratch, and keep the deposit receipt.
Before the first ride
Before leaving, confirm which fuel to use, where to park at night, and who to call if the bike is stopped or towed.
